A.R. Rahman Signs Up for the Bollywood Remake of ‘Fault in Our Stars’

Acclaimed composer A. R. Rahman will compose the music for the upcoming Bollywood remake of The Fault in Our Stars.

Rahman, 51, is one of India’s most successful composers, whose multiple awards include an Oscar and Grammy for his work on Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire (2008). He worked again with Boyle on the 2010 release 127 Hours starring James Franco.

The Hindi-language remake of The Fault in Our Stars is produced by Fox Star Studios India and was first unveiled back in 2014. Based on John Green’s novel of the same name, The Fault In Our Stars was directed by Josh Boone and starred Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort and Nat Wolff, with Laura Dern, Sam Trammell and Willem Dafoe in supporting roles. Woodley played a 16-year-old cancer patient who attends a support group where she subsequently meets and falls in love with a cancer survivor (Elgort).

The Bollywood version marks the directorial debut of well-known casting director Mukesh Chhabra. Sushant Singh Rajput, whose credits include cricket biopic M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, has been signed on for the lead.

As part of its India slate, Fox Star Studios has also produced local versions of international titles such as 2014’s City Lights, the Hindi remake of U.K. foreign-language film Oscar entry Metro Manila. The same year, the studio released Bang Bang!, the Bollywood reworking of the Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz film Knight and Day, which starred Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif.

Rahman’s latest international project was Iranian director Majid Majidi’s India-set drama Beyond the Clouds.
