Rahman for theme of Champions League T20

31 10 2008

ESPN Star Sports, the official broadcaster of Champions League Twenty20, has roped in A R Rahman to compose the official anthem of the league.

The Champions League Twenty20 is scheduled to take place from 3 -10 December and the inaugural match will be played in Mumbai.

ESS Asia MD Manu Sawhney said, “Champions League Twenty20 is a platform where the best of the world come and play. It is premium, aspirational and the highest honor the game has to offer. In our mind, it is to cricket what AR Rahman is to music.

The official anthem will reverberate not just in India but will transcend all language barriers across the global cricket fraternity.”

Meanwhile, IPL chairman Lalit Modi said the five-year deal with Pepsi as the ‘pouring rights partner’ had been mutually terminated. “It would be wrong to say that PepsiCo broke the deal because the Rs 500 million sponsorship deal was called off mutually by both the parties. In the first season of IPL, we had faced some problems during the matches. For example, there was a shortage on soft drinks and people were not allowed to carry water bottles inside the stadium,” Modi added while addressing the press.

Ghajini ~ Rahman is back with Aamir Khan

28 10 2008

Aamir Khan’s Ghajini was slated for a Diwali release this year, but it had to be postponed because Aamir suffered a ligament injury. Not satisfied by this decision, Aamir wanted to create some kind of buzz for the film. Now he is releasing the promos of the film today.

Some source close to Aamir Khan said, “Originally, even when Aamir was making Taare Zameen Par, he had planned a Diwali release for Ghajini. But because of his ligament injury he had to take a break for two months as he couldn’t shoot for the stunts.

So the release had to be postponed. But Aamir was hell-bent on having a Diwali release, even if it was only the promos. He decided to release at least the first moving visuals on Diwali.”

Since the past fifteen days, Aamir has been slogging to complete the promos on time. The source continued, “Aamir has been working non-stop in order to meet the deadline. He requested A R Rahman to put aside his other commitments and come to Mumbai to work on the background score of the promos.

Rahman, who generally doesn’t work outside Chennai, gave in to this last minute request and came to Mumbai. He has been working in a Mumbai lab for the past four days, only on Aamir’s insistence. Being such a perfectionist, he didn’t want to compromise on anything at all.”

Yuvvraaj ~ The first look and Quotes on Music

6 10 2008

If initial sound of Yuvvraaj is any indication, Subhash Ghai, A R Rahman and Gulzar have a winner in hands. The teasers of this yet another magnum opus from Ghai are out and so far, reactions from all around have been positive all the way.

Though one is yet to hear the words in the song, just the sound of piano playing in the background with some well etched frames featuring the quartet of Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Zayed Khan are collectively good enough to promise a lot in the offering. Add to that a lavish look of the film and one can almost sense a Taal round the corner.

Years back Ghai and Rahman had created magic with Taal which finds itself amongst one of the all time great soundtracks. Though Rahman along with Ismail Darbar did come up with a very good soundtrack in Kisna as well, it went largely unnoticed. Now with Yuvvraaj, Ghai is back with Rahman and one expects nothing but magic from the showman and the maestro!

Slum Dog Millionnaire ~ Rahman goes West again

19 08 2008

Maestro makes it to Hollywood again. This time Bollywood’s super singer Sukhwinder has recorded a song for Danny Boyle’s film Slum Dog Millionaire. Starring Irfan Khan and Anil Kapoor, its music is given by AR Rahman. “Lyrics of the song were amazing. It is written by Gulzaar saab and music is naturally peppy, the way all Rahman songs are. I loved singing ‘Jai Ho’ and I must have sung the song so many times that eventually Rahman got really perplexed. Now they are wondering who would edit all the versions and which version is the best,” laughs Sukhwinder.

Film is based on a true story, and it’s about a kid from the slums of Mumbai, who has nothing – he’s ill educated, he’s illiterate – and he goes on the Hindi version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ and wins it. It has tongue-in-cheek humor. This film is written by Simon Beaufoy.

As for Sukhwinder Singh he is all set to ride the Hollywood wave after winning over Indian audience with his voice and melody. His other Hollywood venture as a music director and singer is Steven Spielberg’s next film.

For this film Sukhwinder is recording a ‘kutch’ song. “I chose folk because it will stand out in the crowd.

Set Me Free, the English pop album which flooded the market in October 2006, was originally released in 1991. At that time, the credits read ” Music composed by A.S. Huge hoardings sprung up all over Chennai city, publicizing the new album obviously in a bid to capitalize on Rahman’s current popularity. Madhav Das, the executive director of Magnasound, didn’t even feel the need to confer with A.R.Rahman before releasing the album. “Why should I ask Rahman about re-releasing an old album with a new name? After all Rahman too changed his name without asking anyone, didn’t he?” says Das. On the other hand, Rahman is livid. “I’m not ashamed of my old album. Neither am I trying to hide my past,” explained the music director.

Marmayogi, the immediate mega venture of Kamal Hassan after Dasavatharam will have more number of songs, says A R Rahman. The music maestro, who is joining hands with the versatile actor after a gap has said in an interview that Kamal has demanded more songs for the film, as the script has ample scope for music.

If it is the case, then why Kamal should ask more numbers from me for Marmayogi.’ Actor Kamal Hassan says that his next mega venture Marmayogi is purely a historical subject, which has more scope for music than Dasavatharam. According to the actor, the story of Marmayogi is based on some interesting incidents happened in 7 century.

“There is no History Science mixture in Marmayogi. It is totally a different attempt and it has lot of scope for music, which helps Rahman to play as he like. I don’t like to disappoint my media friends by refusing or denying any of their reports on this project.”
